The Polo Charity match between Australia and New Zealand was played at Christchurch this year. Like every year, both the teams prepared well for the iconic match. It was an iconic match, but could Kiwis beat Australia this year? Or Would Australians triumph over Kiwis for second year in a row? The annual Polo match that took place at Christchurch witnessed a large crowd. Hundreds turned out for the annual event. It was not just any other Polo match, it was like the el-classico of Polo. The match was a Trans-Tasman showdown. “Any day New Zealand plays Australia it is pretty intense," said NZ Polo Player Jimmy Wood.
The Kiwis were fervent to right some wrongs after being popped last year. The Australians were ready to win again this year. "For many of us this is as big as it gets," said Australian Polo Player James Lester. "Last year they sneaked away with it, we are adamant for that not to happen again," said Wood. Players came from as far afield as Dubai for the international between Australia and New Zealand which was hosted by the Port Hills Polo Club on the outskirts of Christchurch. "We don't know them well and the Kiwis have their own horses, so they have a slight advantage," exclaimed Lester.
The event raises around $100,000 from the Polo match for the charity. As well as the battles on the field, there's a lot of activity off it. "We make no bones about it, black and white, we are here to make as much money as we can for Ronald McDonald House," said Ben Turner from the Port Hills Polo Club. The match was quite intense and closed with Australians winning the charity match for the second time in a row after defeating Kiwis by 11-8.
